Lights will guide you

I admit it.

Portraits are easily the weakest part of my photo game. That's why I completely panicked when I was asked to shoot the spring players of the year. I stayed up late all weekend trying to think of any idea, and decided on a theme of motion. Then I wondered how to make that theme actually look like it did in my head.

I bought 40 feet of black fabric and coils of rope light... then taped those lights (which were plugged in) to each of these athletes as they gave me the strangest looks I have ever seen (it probably didn't help that I was nervous and jittery... I mean, who wants to be responsible for killing the career of a promising college athlete because he or she tripped over an extension cord in the dark?).

In the end, all of the lights are now broken in some way. My arms are still healing from all the mosquito bites. My car, which doubled as a generator for some of the portraits, needs a tune up... But it was worth it. And once again, the layout is awesome.

I want to thank everyone for their ideas and encouragement as I went through this process. And I want to thank the athletes for their willingness and patience to go along with this idea.

Had you tried anything like this before? Did you really expect them to come out this well? Amazing shots.

wow.
this is why you get paid well, eh?

so..was it done with rear-curtain slow-sync? That's the only thing I can think of in order to achieve this effect.

Once again, salutations to your creativity.

I am definitely going to spend a few sleepless nights trying this out. Well done (I agree that the text here is a bit small)

Brilliant!!! I cannot emphasize how impressed I am by this concept. You are an inspiration!

Ok, you barely scratched the surface on explaining exactly how you did this. Could you continue in greater detail how you used the lights and were able to also get nice 'frozen' subjects?

Nothing like the feeling of "knowing"that you're going to screw up and then pulling something way better than your most optimistic hopes. But then, that's what makes you a good photographer (or any other profession)! Congratulations on the success!

WOW!!! These shots are so awesome! You really went all out here. I especially like the shot of the runner and the city lights in the b/g. It's like he's got bling! lol

Brilliant work. I second the request for an explanation of the clear subjects, though.

Love the idea. I did something similar to convey motion but instead of rope lights I used glow-sticks from the Dollar Store. One good example is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/snwbeast/2298243467/in/set-72157604028633661/

Wow, Pure genius!
The results speak for themselves. I hope it's ok if I print out a hard-copy for personal reference. Your assignment is a great example of how to use "alternative light sources" for getting spectacular results that "Fit the Assignment".

Thanks for Sharing!

Wow... I am in awe- not JUST from the brilliant idea- but the solution is so "frugle" (per se)...

I may perhaps borrow this idea... :)

Nicely done..... and the layout looks killer too.

To avoid tripping hazards look for battery operated strings of Christmas lights to try this with.

Absolutely in sane! I used the same technique to shoot Ottawa Senators forward Dany Heatley, but you took it to the extreme!
